DETROIT (AP) — The New York Knicks picked up some needed scoring punch Thursday, acquiring Alex Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic from the Detroit Pistons. The Knicks sent Quentin Grimes, Evan Fournier, Malachi Flynn, Ryan Arcidiacono and two second-round picks to the Pistons in the deal before the NBA's trade deadline. They found it in Burks, who played well in a previous stint for the Knicks, and Bogdanovic, a reliable outside shooter. Bogdanovic is averaging 20.2 points and shooting 41.5% from 3-point range. The Pistons, who have the worst record in the league, were busy ahead of the trade deadline.

Doug McDermott was once traded by Indiana to San Antonio, and now, the Spurs have traded him back to the Pacers. Trade deadline day in the NBA gave them and plenty of other players an entirely new outlook, plus may have even reshaped the start of the playoff push as well. He and Alec Burks are headed to the Knicks, a team that entered Thursday a game out of the No. Defending NBA champion Denver didn't make a move on deadline day, nor did reigning East champion Miami, though the Heat did their trade-season work a couple weeks ago by bringing in Terry Rozier from Charlotte for Kyle Lowry. So-called "earned wage access" programs, which operate either directly to the consumer or through employers, let workers tap a portion of their wages before payday, often for a fee. "It's another version of payday loans," Monica Burks, policy counsel at the Center for Responsible Lending, a consumer advocacy group, said of earned wage access. CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Five former correctional officers in West Virginia were indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday in connection with the 2022 death of an incarcerated man who was beaten while handcuffed and restrained in an interview room and later a jail cell. The indictments in West Virginia's southern U.S. District Court come weeks after two different West Virginia corrections officers pleaded guilty to a felony conspiracy charge stemming from the fatal beating of the same inmate, 37-year-old Quantez Burks. The case has drawn scrutiny to conditions and deaths at the Southern Regional Jail. Earlier this month, West Virginia agreed to pay $4 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by inmates who described conditions at the jail as inhumane. Two other former corrections officers were indicted Thursday on a charge of failing to intervene in the unlawful assault, resulting in Burks' death.

Burks tried to make a leaping fourth-down grab down the left sideline but saw the ball slip from his grasp.
